Draw a Kawaii face
My tablet PC stylus wears out quickly due to my strong writing pressure. So I purchased an inexpensive replacement. But that cheap one did not allow me to draw as smoothly as the genuine one. I need to find another replacement that is good or comfortable to wear. Or it may be cheaper to buy a genuine replacement.
New illustration
New illustrations were posted on April 20.
This is an illustration aimed to be straight "kawaii". There is an extra version of the damaged state.
Looking back
This is an addition to this newsletter in which I look back at the review notes I keep for each illustration I do. I look back at them to remind myself of how I felt at the time, and also to look back at them now to see what I think will be useful.
This illustration was drawn with stronger shading than usual. But the time I spent was the same as usual. The lighting required was determined by the effects of the explosion. So I could color without hesitation.
It was difficult to describe her facial expressions. Her wide open eyes are her signature. But when I drew it the same way as the game artwork it scared me. If her mouth is not smiling, her big eyes don't necessarily look happy.
I wish the body shape was more elongated. Yet it is too round. I shrunk it too much trying to fit it on the screen.
At this time I wrote in my notebook, "Describing facial expressions was difficult”. Yes, you are absolutely right. This is a difficult task. In this illustration I was trying to make the character resemble the original and then give her a frightened expression. What I was doing was complicated. The illustration I ended up with in this way was not very satisfactory.
I knew my illustrations were not great but did nothing. But I should have tried again and redrawn my face. In fact, I had drawn one unconvincing face in a new illustration this week, but I took the plunge and redrew it.
It was hard work, but I'm glad I redrew it. Faces are the most important part of character illustrations. So I hope I can do it like this in the future.
